Call for PhD Student Pitches
The aim of this symposium is to provide a forum for researchers and technologists to present new ideas and contributions in the form of technical papers, panel discussions, as well as real-world evaluation in the field of wireless communications, networking and signal processing. This 14th symposium will bring together various wireless communication systems developers to discuss the current status, technical challenges, standards, fundamental issues, and future services and applications.
PhD students (enrolled in any PhD Program in the world), prior to the date of their final defense, are invited to submit a three minute video pitch describing their research activities.
Pitches are welcome in the following Tracks :
Track1 – Communication Theory, Signal Processing, Information Theory, Antennas and Propagation
Track2 – Networks, Protocols, Internet of Things, Services and Applications
The language should be adequate to address non-expert audience (i.e. persons with some background on wireless communications and networks, but not specifically in the field of the PhD thesis). The candidate should have in mind a potential job recruiter in academia, company or research center.
Pitches will be assessed by a jury made of University Professors, Industry representatives and Senior Researchers. Each jury member will assess those pitches closer to their interest. This assessment will provide an initial ranking.
PhD students willing to present their pitch during ISWCS 2017 will be invited to perform their presentation (in three minutes ,reproducing the pitch, with the support of slides) on August 28; they will be requested to confirm their presence by June 30. They will also be given the chance of contributing with the presentation of their PhD through a poster during a dedicated session on Aug. 28. People attending the session on August 28 will also be requested to assess the presented pitches. At the end of the day, the final ranking will be based on the initial one (provided by the jury), plus the one provided by the audience, with equal weight.
The winner will be nominated during the ISWCS 2017 welcome reception in the even ing of August 28. The PhD student winning the award will receive a check of 300 EUR, and a certificate describing the contest, and the jury members. The best pitches (a number defined by the jury, at minimum ten) will be made available on the ISWCS 2017 we bsite for public download.
It is expected that the pitch will provide: i) name and affiliation(s), ii) research problem addressed, iii) idea(s) investigated and research goal(s), iv) potential impact, v) state of the art on the subject, vi) a statement regarding the personal wish for the future after PhD (looking for a postdoc position, etc.). Additionally, one single powerpoint slide should be sent, including: i) name and affiliation(s), ii) title of the thesis , iii) PhD supervisor , iv) expected time for final defense , v) some keywords , vi) contacts (email address, phone number).
Pitches should be sent to the PhD Student Program Chair before
June 1st June 8th June 15th, through a link for download. The slide should be sent to the PhD Student Program C hair via email within the same deadline. Accepted candidates will be notified before June 20th June 27th June 30th.
